Michael Tomasky on Mitt Romney’s Economic Failure in Massachusetts – The Daily Beast
“Mitt Romney loves to attack Barack Obama’s record of job creation as president. Too bad Mitt’s record as Massachusetts governor pales in comparison.”

The next big battle in the war over women, ctd. – The Plum Line – The Washington Post
“With the Paycheck Fairness Act gaining a higher profile, the question will be how much longer Mitt Romney can avoid taking a position on it. The interesting wrinkle here is that Romney recently endorsed the concept of pay equity in general when he was questioned about Lily Ledbetter. But he hasn’t said whether he would have signed Lily Ledbetter, and he hasn’t taken a position on Paycheck Fairness, even though it will now be voted on in the Senate. What’s particularly noteworthy about Romney’s reticence is that he has repeatedly argued that women won’t allow Obama and/or Dems to distract them from their economic woes by focusing on social issues, and that their economic circumstances will ultimately dictate their votes. But here is an issue that is all about women’s economic circumstances.”

Romney Courts Trump’s Dollars, but Shuns His Message – NYTimes.com
“In a heartbeat, Mr. Trump once again offered himself as the latest object lesson for modern presidential campaigns as they chase big dollars. Mr. Trump’s willingness to open his wallet appears to outweigh any embarrassment Mr. Romney might feel from being associated with his comments.”

Mitt Romney’s losing gamble on Donald Trump – The Washington Post
“Even still, it seems like too risky a gamble for Romney to associate with Trump. Regardless of whether Trump is allied with Romney or not, Trump’s first, second and third concern is and always will be what is good for him.”

What would Romney have done in January 2009? – The Plum Line – The Washington Post
“But it is an endorsement of stimulus spending in general. Yet today, according to Romney, the only function Obama’s stimulus spending has served is as an impediment to the recovery. More broadly, Romney’s positions on these matters have now become ridiculously incoherent. The other day Romney claimed rather casually in an interview with Mark Halperin that he would never think of cutting government spending too dramatically, because, why, that would risk throwing us back into a recession or a depression! As Jon Chait noted, in saying that Romney basically admitted, if accidentally, that his whole case against Obama — that his spending deepened the economic crisis — is thoroughly bogus. And yet, here he is again today, saying that stimulus spending impeded the recovery. So, again: Isn’t it time to ask Romney what he would have done as president in January of 2009? Is he really going to tell reporters with a straight face that he wouldn’t have pushed for some stimulus spending to rescue an economy in free fall?”

“CBO’s analysis finds that ARRA has significantly boosted both the number of people employed and the number of hours worked. ARRA protected the economy during the worst of the recession, and three years after its enactment, it is still saving and creating jobs. Without it, up to one and a half million more workers in March would have been either unemployed or struggling to get by on less income.”

Michelle Obama Writes ‘American Grown’ – NYTimes.com
“For anyone who has not been paying attention to how Mrs. Obama started a garden on the South Lawn and how it morphed into her anti-obesity campaign, the book, which is filled with pictures that make vegetables look as beautiful as flowers, neatly sums it up. (And there are plenty of shots of Bo, the family dog.) ‘American Grown’ is filled with advice for parents, schools, cities and states on how they can help combat the obesity crisis: how to start gardens, get children to like healthy foods and find more opportunities for exercise. It also provides recipes and some startling statistics.”

A Government Program That Could Improve the Economy – NYTimes.com
“Considering how often the federal government is depicted as a huge, bloated, incomprehensible bureaucracy, it’s always refreshing when it does something forward-thinking and consumer-friendly. In the technology realm, it does that fairly often.”

G.O.P. Fights Against Military Cuts – NYTimes.com
“If Congress cuts federal spending, does that help or hurt an economy in recession? The Republicans say it helps. What if Congress cuts federal defense spending? In that case, the Republicans say it hurts.”

The Maddow Blog – Another missed opportunity to lead
“That’s not much of a response. By Romney’s reasoning, decency is irrelevant — he should partner with anyone, no matter how vile, so long as it furthers his ambitions and gets him more votes. The Obama campaign released a new video this morning, contrasting Romney’s response to supporters’ extremism with John McCain’s.”
-
The Morning Plum: Stop letting Mitt Romney off easy – The Plum Line – The Washington Post
“Romney will claim that the effect of the stimulus has been to destroy jobs. As it has in the past, the Romney camp will justify this by pointing to a bogus metric — the net jobs lost on Obama’ watch. That includes the hundreds and hundreds of thousands of jobs lost before the stimulus went into effect. Really: The Romney camp’s claim is that we can calculate that the stimulus destroyed jobs overall with a metric that factors in all the jobs destroyed before the stimulus took effect. That’s not an exaggeration. It really is the Romney campaign’s position. It’s time to ask Romney himself to justify it.”

Give ’Em Hell Barry – The Washington Post
“Like Truman — and, for that matter, like Bush — Obama confronts a sharply divided country, the need to rally his own supporters and the imperative of convincing undecided voters that electing his opponent would be a dangerous risk. What Truman taught is that Americans would rather see a president with the strength to fight than a politician with such sensitive sensibilities that he leaves all the tough stuff to others.”
-
Identity crisis for American capitalism – The Washington Post
“We would all surely welcome an intelligent presidential debate on what kind of capitalism we want to have. Only please spare us the self-serving nonsense about who created or destroyed how many jobs. In almost any form of capitalism, running the government is not the same as running the economy, and neither is like running Bain Capital.”

Debt-Ceiling Deja Vu Could Sink Economy – Bloomberg
“In other words, congressional Republicans are taking the government’s creditworthiness hostage when they threaten not to increase the debt ceiling. Politically advantageous as this may be, it is terrible economics. To understand why, let us consider the economic effects of last year’s debt-ceiling debate. If we know our history, perhaps we will not be doomed to repeat it.”
